Wind Creasing
Also called: creased shingle, wind crease, folded shingle
Wind Creasing is a horizontal crack or fold across a shingle caused by wind lifting it and folding it back on itself. The crease breaks the shingle's water-shedding surface permanently, and unlike hail bruising it is usually plainly visible.

What it means
Wind creasing is damage caused by uplift. Wind gets under the leading edge of a shingle, lifts it, and folds it back. When it drops, the shingle carries a crease where it was folded, running horizontally across the tab.
The fold breaks the reinforcing mat along the crease line, and it breaks the surface too. Water no longer sheds cleanly across that point, and the shingle has a permanent weakness where the fibreglass is fractured.
How it differs from hail damage
The table above sets the three apart at a glance. The reasoning underneath it is worth having as well, because the two get discussed together as storm damage while looking nothing alike and being assessed by completely different means.
Hail damage is a scatter of discrete circular impact points, randomly distributed across whatever slopes were exposed to falling stones, and it is frequently invisible to the untrained eye.
Wind creasing is linear, obvious, and concentrated where uplift occurs: along eaves, rakes, ridges, hips, and on the elevations facing into the wind. It is often accompanied by shingles that are missing entirely, since a shingle lifted hard enough to crease is one gust away from leaving the roof.
The practical consequence is that wind damage is much easier to establish and much easier for a homeowner to see for themselves.
Why it cannot be repaired in place
Because the damage is a fracture, not a displacement.
The instinct on seeing a lifted shingle is to press it back down and seal it, and that does address the immediate appearance. What it does not do is repair the mat, which was broken when the shingle folded. The crease is still there under the sealant, and it remains the point at which the shingle will fail.
For that reason creased shingles are normally scoped for replacement. A contractor who reseats them is producing a roof that looks repaired and is not.
What it means for scope
The extent matters more than the presence. A handful of creased shingles along one rake is a repair. Creasing across whole elevations, particularly where it is accompanied by widespread seal strip failure, points toward replacement of at least those slopes.
Two further questions usually follow. Whether the remaining seal strips have been compromised, because a wind event strong enough to crease shingles has often broken seals across a much wider area than it visibly damaged. And whether a partial repair can be made to match, which is where matching considerations enter.
Common mistakes
Counting only the missing shingles is the most common. The creased ones are damaged too and are easy to overlook because they are still in place.
The second is inspecting only the elevation where shingles came off. Uplift affects more of the roof than it strips.
The third is accepting a reseat as a repair. It is not one.

- The crease itself cannot be undone. The fibreglass mat has been folded and broken along the line, and sealing or gluing the shingle back down leaves the fracture in place. Creased shingles are normally replaced rather than reseated.
