Granule Loss is the removal of the protective mineral surfacing from an asphalt shingle, exposing the asphalt underneath. Hail knocks granules off at impact points, but so does age and ordinary weathering, which is why granule loss alone rarely settles a claim.

What it means

Granule loss is the removal of the mineral granules embedded in an asphalt shingle’s surface, leaving the asphalt beneath exposed. Those granules give the roof its colour and, far more importantly, shield the asphalt from ultraviolet light, so losing them is not merely cosmetic.

Hail causes it at the point of impact, where the stone displaces granules and often bruises the mat underneath. So does time, foot traffic, water flow, and the ordinary process of an asphalt roof reaching the end of its life.

Why it is weaker evidence than it looks

Because the two causes produce a similar appearance, and only one of them is a covered peril.

Every asphalt roof sheds granules. A new roof sheds loose ones in its first months. An old roof sheds them because the asphalt has hardened and no longer holds them. A homeowner who finds grit in the gutters has found evidence that they own an asphalt roof.

This is why granule loss alone is a weak basis for a claim, and why an inspection that rests on it is easy for an adjuster to reject. Ageing and weathering are excluded, and generalised granule loss is exactly what ageing and weathering look like.

What makes it evidence

Pattern and corroboration.

Impact-related granule loss appears as discrete circular areas distributed randomly across exposed slopes, consistent with stones falling from the sky rather than with water running down a roof. It concentrates where hail would strike rather than in gullies and along flow paths.

It also comes with company. A genuine hail event that stripped granules will normally have dented the soft metals, marked the vents and the flashing, and produced bruising underneath the granule loss. Those markers together make a case that the granule loss alone cannot.

Where the loss follows flow paths, concentrates on the older or more exposed slopes uniformly, or appears across an entire roof without corresponding impact marks, the straightforward reading is age.

Why it matters even so

Once the asphalt is exposed, it degrades faster. Ultraviolet exposure hardens it, it becomes brittle, and the shingle’s remaining life shortens. On a roof with substantial impact-related granule loss, the damage is real and quantifiable in terms of service life, whether or not the roof leaks.

Common mistakes

Leading a claim with granule loss is the main one. It invites the ageing argument immediately.

The second is collecting granules from the gutter as evidence, which demonstrates nothing about cause.

The third is dismissing it entirely. In combination with impact marks and bruising it is part of a coherent picture, and documenting it is worth doing.

Homeowners often ring having found grit in the gutters or on the drive and concluded the roof is destroyed. Some granule loss is normal on any ageing roof, so avoid confirming damage on that basis. Log it as a reason to inspect, not as evidence in itself.

Questions people ask about granule loss

Is granules in the gutter a sign of hail damage?
Not by itself. Shingles shed granules throughout their life, most heavily when new and again as they age, so grit in the gutters is normal. Storm-related loss is distinguished by its pattern and by the presence of impact marks, not by the fact that granules are present.
Why does granule loss matter at all?
Because the granules shield the asphalt from ultraviolet light. Once an area is exposed, the asphalt degrades far more quickly, so the loss is of remaining service life at that point. Widespread exposure means a roof ageing faster than it should.
Can granule loss alone support a claim?
Rarely, because the same appearance results from ordinary weathering, which is excluded. What supports a claim is granule loss in a pattern consistent with impact, together with corroborating evidence such as bruising and dents on soft metals.
